Announcing LinuxForce Cluster Services

Philadelphia, PA — 15 December 2011 — LinuxForce, Inc. announced today the availability of LinuxForce Cluster Services℠, a new IT (Information Technology) service offering. LinuxForce Cluster Services℠ design, provision, and maintain redundant, high availability (HA) clustered servers. HA servers are needed by organizations to assure a reliable system for delivery of critical business applications whether on-site, colocated, or "in the cloud". LinuxForce's advanced approach to implementing HA server clusters protect valuable data and assure continuity for virtualized systems while minimizing overall costs and maximizing performance without burdening existing staff.

In brief, the service works by configuring several Linux servers in a cluster for redundancy. Each server individually hosts critical data on Linux virtual machines (VMs) that are then replicated to other physical servers in the cluster by redundant shared storage. Redundancy significantly reduces the risk of downtime from any single point of hardware failure, provides spare capacity to support upgrades and migrations, and allows businesses to safely operate older systems for more years before replacement.

LinuxForce designs and implements each cluster specifically for the needs of the client business based on system design requirements, Linux best practices for high-availability, security, redundancy and ease of failover. The cluster design permits load balancing between servers within the cluster to maximize performance.

LinuxForce Cluster Services℠ provides these HA systems designed and configured completely with FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) to eliminate expensive licensing costs. FOSS components include Debian GNU/Linux or Ubuntu for the operating system, KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) for virtualization, DRBD (Distributed Replicated Block Device) for shared storage, and Pacemaker to constantly monitor operational status, detect service failures and automatically migrate VMs in the redundant infrastructure. LinuxForce Cluster Services℠ typically include the configuration of additional FOSS tools such as Nagios and Munin to support monitoring of system availability and performance so that problems can be discovered and corrected quickly.

"Our cluster solutions are developed with the decades of experience and the talent of LinuxForce's dedicated staff", said LinuxForce CEO, CJ Fearnley. Mr. Fearnley also noted that "it is remarkable how FOSS enables organizations to benefit from solutions that previously required proprietary software investments that only larger organizations could afford."

LinuxForce Cluster Services℠ are already supporting several clients in the greater Philadelphia region including Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, The Franklin Institute Science Museum, The Constitutional Walking Tour of Philadelphia, and MostlyWeb.

LinuxForce offers its Remote Responder℠ service to provide 24x7 system monitoring, support and administration for cluster infrastructure. Our open-source experts can proactively administer and support clustered systems remotely using a secure connection. Moreover, Remote Responder℠ services include "smart" technology programmed to discover and correctively react to many situations before they become problems. This improves cluster maintenance and saves organizations and their IT staffs a significant amount of time and expense, while maximizing up-time and productivity.

When the Remote Responder℠ service is combined with LinuxForce Cluster Services℠ a client receives Linux server cluster design and implementation; continuous upgrades of Debian GNU/Linux or Ubuntu operating system and business applications; critical security upgrades; service-level monitoring; shared data storage; and system auditing.

LinuxForce provides commercial IT services and support to businesses throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. For more information, and to consult with a LinuxForce expert about your business needs, call 610-734-1900.
